Mechen 3, Gottwrischer 1: Mechen came away with the home victory over a Gottwrischer team that looked like it was a little confused. They had trouble adjusting as Mechen alternately pushed or slowed the tempo. Not an unfrequent scene was an odd-man rush for Mechen where one or more Gottwrischer players attempted to stop the break and ended up sprawled on the ice after being deked.

Graphics, Much Thanks to Turkommen

Here are some graphics from Erki Turkommen, a devoted Onatten fan and a considerate person. Erki has drawn some graphics representing a few teams so far. (Including Matexipar, so please be satisfied, UBM) If anyone would like a graphic or has an idea to pitch to Erki, please comment.

Breaking news: Holtzlund proposes trade to Te Staff for Sherm Reinhardt. Details are still in the works, but it is rumored that the whole team for Holtzlund could be traded. Te Staff has not responded yet.

Brandy and Pucks, The Second

Brandy and Pucks

by Kadmus Greningen

Is Reinhardt in danger?

There is only one name on the lips of all Staffers this week, the one of Sherman Reinhardt, who, if he continues on this pace, will break all the scoring records of the Borschland Hockey League within three seasons.

The tale so far, in three games: 6 goals, 6 assists, and he had a hand in every goal Te Staff scored up to the third one versus Dohmatische, which was finished by Hauke Sybrandy off a rebound from a Christoph Anselm slapshot.

Anselm, who led Te Staff with 21 goals (19 assists) last season, was asked after the game what he thought of playing second fiddle to Reinhardt's concertmaster.

"Whatever helps the team," said the notorious ladies man, with his trademark rakish smile. "But let's hope no phase-shift lets in any more Merikanischez (Americans). I might be out of a job.

"No fear of that. Anselm seems to be skating even faster this year with Reinhardt's example to live up to.

But there are rumors of dissatisfaction coming from corners of the nation, especially Matexipar, the home of the nationalist United Borschland Movement.

The UBM has so little support among the people that it was unable to muster enough votes to send even one minister to parliament. Some even consider the group a glorified fan club, as they are dedicated supporters of the Iron Sticks of Matexipar, with their drums and clangers making a constant racket at every game.

Letters have been received at this agency of the press, Te borscher sporttelegraaf, from the UBM collectively, that call Reinhardt an "illegal" player.

No official from Te Staff has confirmed this, but it has been whispered in drinking establishments near the River Oval, where the team plays, that Sherman Reinhardt has received certain other letters threatening his life.

If this is true, it behooves the government and the Association of Detectives to find quickly these troublemakers, starting with the UBM or whatever shadow groups may be operating amongst them.

Players from outside Borschland, and indeed outside the Continent have always been welcome in the Borschland Hockey League. To this point, there have been few of those true "ousslaenders," such as Skylar Magnusson from Sweden. And none have made the impact of a Sherman Reinhardt.

We are not an intolerant nation. If Reinhardt had signed his contract with Matexipar, it must be likely that the UBM would welcome him with open arms.

But now, as Te Staff has benefited from Reinhardt's presence, that benefit should not be taken away.

Lack of offense dooms Rijward

Mechen 1, Rijward 0: Rokus Osthav'n made 43 saves last night, but the one he missed counted the most. The only goal scored by either team, it came with 8:36 to go in the third period. Doutze Holwerde, the right wing for Mechen, beat Osthav'n on the upper glove side (left) thanks to Wiebe Kappe screening Osthav'n.

Onatten 3, Gottwrischer 1: Jaska Hiekkalinna, a Finnish acquiry of this offseason, scored two goals and had an assist for Onatten. Hiekkalinna was not a goal-scorer in the Finnish leagues, and so this game made GM Leevi Keisari look like a smart man for taking this gamble and hiring him.

Bjaward 3, Menesanne 1: Wob Ramsbeck did an admirable job in goal yesterday, making 45 saves. Normally 45 saves is enough for a tie at least, but when your defense gives up 48 shots, it's difficult to win. Ramsbeck was bombarded, including 8 shots and two goals by Diederik Eisinga.

Bevinlunz 3, Wrischer 2: Bevinlunz finally found its offense after scoring just one goal in the past two games. Please comment. Saturday's games will be reported on Sunday, but all teams get off days on Sundays.

Brandy and Pucks: American brandy in old bottles

Cashoth Pernoth, the normally taciturn Gimrothian goalminder, had several words to describe our foreigner Sherman Reinhardt's performance on Saturday night.

"So good, as if, three arrows from Bannar's quiver," he said, his mouth moving up slightly in what is for most Gimrothians an expression of pure joy.

Bannar, the national hero of Gimrothian saga, once dispatched a Gimrothian dragon with three arrows-- one to the eye, one to the throat, one to the big toe. Characteristically, as Gimrothian saga does have a kind of wryness to it, it was the one in the toe that killed it.

This night, Reinhardt's darts found their mark in the bottom left, bottom right, and upper right of the goal mouth, as the American hero slew perfectly-dubbed Holtzlund netter Dragoon Camarata with Bannarian arrows.

As it turned out, Reinhardt's heroism would not mean the salvation of Te Staff; there were many goals to go around that night against a team the timber axes of which seem to have gone dull. But it may be a harbinger of the future.

Every year our venerable and venerated team is expected to win the Grand Cup of our league's regular season championship, and every year-- it seems-- we never take the easy route up that mountain.

This year, with the addition of the large and fast-skating man from the mists, the "Merikanische"-- the outside world is none too real to us Borschers-- it is possible that there will be a new way of doing things. Maybe less fingernail-chewing, but Staff Borsch has enough tension on its own without having to resort to more brandy to keep the nerves steady during a tough match.

The venerable old bottle of Te Staff, which has been dispensing championship vintages often and often, now contains some new and strong stuff. Call it Vintage Sherman Reinhardt, or "Sherm" to his colleagues.

We all look forward to sampling more of this stuff.
