Brandy and Pucks, The Seventh

Brandy and Pucks

by Kadmus Greningen

Of course there are rumors.

I could not report all of them, as my ration of ink is limited, but rest assured they will all be printed somewhere in this newsprint-happy city.

My job is to consider the most likely, if there is such a thing.

The police have released, officially, that someone has reported a sighting of Upright Bears in the disappeared Sherman Reinhardt's neighborhood in Rirlver, somewhere around 3 AM the morning of his disappearance.

What Upright Bears were doing in Rirlver at 3 AM is also an unknown, since Upright Bears, who hail from that nearly mythical southern land of Lower Bearland and who either must be Bearish diplomats or spies or both, tend not to stray far from their diplomatic neighborhood, Antopf, in the center of Te Staff.

There was no diplomatic automobile, however, which is the Bears' preferred mode of transportation. They are very grand for riding around in horseless carriages, which makes them both less a spectacle (we understand their reticence to walk in crowds) and superior technologically.

If the Bears were mixed up in the Reinhardt affair, they would not want a car, because of course the car has a number, and there are only 17 diplomatic cars registered to the Bearish embassy in Te Staff, and someone would have remembered.

But they could also have just been revelers, for it is famous in Borschland that it is impossible to make a Bear go home until the wee hours, since it takes that long for him to realize he has drunk too much.

Thus the saying, "Three bears, 24 bottles."

Sherman Reinhardt had been seen more than once at the Bearish embassy. The most recent affair was the observance of the 79th anniversary of the Independence from Britain, where there was much dancing, Rachael Martijnz (also still disappeared) was present, and the fast-skating Amerikansche center met and befriended the Consul General, Lawrence Brumebakerbear.

Some folk say that when you have danced with Upright Bears, there is no going back to human society.

But there are other rumors, including the everpresent United Borschland Movement one, which says that we will see Sherman Reinhardt again after the last puck has dropped and the last tick has gone off the last clock of the season. After, in other words, Matexipar has won the championship.

Also consider that radical Loflinlanders may be involved. They are few but troublesome.

And there is Miss Martijnz, who may have met some wandering Danner and gone to his ski chalet to emerge several weeks later a married woman. The Dann are very charming, although they are not known for their loyalty. The government of Dann has pledged as they can a nationwide search, but that country is so unpeopled and so large that this might take some time.

All of which is to say, dear Reader, that this scribbler has nothing of weight for you yet. Speculate away, and may the Spirit of the Swan be with Sherman Reinhardt.

Brandy and Pucks, The Sixth

Brandy and Pucks by Kadmus Grenigen

"Sherm is disappeared," my editor told me over the telephone. When the call came, I was deep in a biography of the Borschic hero Grundel "The Swan" Mittelmascht. I couldn't sleep, and I had continued reading past dawn, as I often do.

Grundel was a man who battled the Loflins in a raft in the lowlands of the Borschland River. As we all learn in school, these swamps are the largest and most trackless of the entire continent, and they have always resisted large scale draining. For a hundred years, the Loflins hid in the swamps and raided the towns of Atterische and Domatische and peat-cutting villages, until Grundel and his followers rooted them out and had them relocated permanently into Loflinland, where they have since become civilized.

Grundel glided down the waterways with his musket, crossbow, and rafting pole, and the Loflins attempted to kill him for many years. They even caught him and kept him as a prisoner for three days. But he always managed to escape whatever pickle in which he found himself. Maybe this is a good omen for the fate of Sherman Reinhardt, who disappeared overnight after Te Staff's 2-1 win over Rijward. He lives by himself in a flat in the neighborhood of Rirlver, overlooking the water. In the morning, when his housekeeper came in to give him breakfast, he was gone. The bedclothes were thrown back, and some of his clothes were taken along with a valise. Also his wallet was taken, but no other possessions.

The police have no leads. They think that he left-- or was taken-- somewhere between the hours of midnight and dawn, but no one saw or heard any movement.

The police do know, however, that the poetess Rachael Martijns is also missing. She was to go on a winter vacation to a rustic cabin in the country of Dann, and did not arrive there on Thursday as expected. She had taken an express to the Celtlands' city of Chead Mille Failte, and then a Dann National Railway train to Deinde, the capitol of Dann. DNR trains are notorious for their delays, but this one pulled into Deinde only four and a half hours late.

The notorious Matexipar Nationalist Group, the United Borschland Movement, has denied involvement in the affair. But they are not the only ones who were concerned that Reinhardt had tipped the balance of the league in the favor of Te Staff.

Sherman Reinhardt's place in the team will be taken by Bernt Gruhn, and Christoph Anselm will again become the number one center.

May the spirit of The Swan be with Sherman Reinhardt.

Reinhardt's performance leads Te Staff past Rijward

Te Staff 2, Rijward 1: Sherm Reinhardt scored a goal and had an assist, winning the game for Te Staff on a spectacular play with :45 to go in the game. Reinhardt recieved the pass from Christoph Anselm, sprinted down the ice, spun past two Rijward players, deked the last defender and buried the puck in the upper right corner of the net. The goal silenced a Rijward crowd who were sure that they would come away with a point and a tie.

Bjaward loses second straight

Onatten 1, Bjaward 0: Skylar Magnusson had another great performance, in what seems to be his breakout year. Bjaward couldn't do a thing as the Sudmass brothers were limited to six combined shots on goal. That seems to be the formula for defeating Bjaward, to limit the Sudmass brothers' touches.

Shots: Onatten 34-30

Goals: Onatten: Jezioranski, Matieusz

Keep on rooting and commenting, folks. Bjaward needs some encouragement (and a team in front of them to lose a bunch of games).

Another stellar goaltending show

Onatten 1, Rijward 1: The season series between these two teams comes to a close with no clear victor, as a tie was the result of both games. Both goals in this game were scored within a span of 1:05, essentially making it so that neither team could have been said to have "given it away".

Penalties: None

Mechen 2, Domatische 1: Mechen edged Domatische by building a two goal lead, then holding on against a withering barrage of Domatische offense. Every point for Mechen is important, as they are one of about five teams who even have a chance of catching Te Staff. Wiebe Kappe had a pair of assists for Mechen.

Tarlunz 4, Holtzlund 1: The men of the lake are better than the men of the wood, at least for now. Tarlunz swaggered into Holtzlund, and they swaggered out after turning what was expected to be a close game into a rout. Habel Baarda had two goals and an assist in his return to the city in which he grew up. The crowd applauded him loudly when he was introduced.

Summary
