Brandy and Pucks, The Fifth

Brandy and Pucks

The skater and the wordmistress

by Kadmus Greningen

It was hardly noticed amid the general uproar following Te Staff's humbling of Te Lughaus last weekend, but certain of our noted spies among the fairer contingent reported to me that Sherman Reinhardt actually picked up an Anvorian rose that had been flung onto the ice at the close of the match.

No surprise to see roses on the ice. The thorny Borschland rose is, of course, one of the symbols of our city, after the legendary, flowering Rod of Honor that last flowered on its own, we think, some 300 years ago, and is still in its case in Te Staffhaus, and we are waiting for it to flower again.

Also no surprise to see a player pick up a rose. Christoph Anselm skates off from every game with a veritable bouquet. If any of the flingers catches his eye, they are entitled to a kiss.

Our Amerikanische had to this point picked up no roses, much to the dismay of the fair maidens of Staff Borsch, and many have left off throwing them, as roses in winter are expensive to import from the glass houses of Anvoria for no chance at a kiss.

This time, however, there was on Messer Reinhardt's part a dip of the knee and a delicate fingering of the flower, and when he skated over to the Players Ingress to the locker room, he identified his gift-giver-- none other than (if one can believe it) the young poetess Rachael Martijnz.

Miss Martijnz is not given to shallow romance, if we can believe the gossip sheets. It appears that as a girl she was disappointed with a seminary student who married the daughter of a steel magnate.

But as one who has always admired the outside world and even studied English, our poetess might with great reason wish to make the acquaintance of Sherman Reinhardt.

Yet my spies also tell me, that it is possible our goal scorer and the wordsmith have had a prior acquaintance, at the Grand Social three weeks ago, where it is sure they danced, or rather, she taught him somewhat to dance, after he trod on her feet.

I know that fans of sport all over Borschland are waiting for the sequel of this story. It is not so irrelevant to the ice. Many athletes who fall in love play better or worse because of the love. On vill zeen: we shall see.

Brandy and Pucks, the Fourth

Brandy and Pucks - Full Table and a Poesy

by Kadmus Greningen

A third of the way through the season, and our City Boys stand atop the table, thanks this time to the brave defenders who acted as a bulwark exactly as Te Staff's curtain wall (now the path for the Loop Sub line) defended Borschland against the Loflinlanders in the year 65 of the nation.

Matexipar's Iron was not hard enough to break through, due especially to the toughness of defensemen Gerd Luppink and Rogijr Kelmenstremmer, as well as goalie Norbert Grimm, who has not allowed a goal in more than three games.

Poet Rachael Martijnz, who was in the Deacons Box on this night of nights, has contributed a short poesy to commemorate an heroic effort for the City Boys.

The snowflakes, this night, catch lightand driftlike lazy blooms in a shade-dark stream

The wind that comes with its Borschic thruma-bedit is, and all is calm, a dream.

But men who skated, all elatedfor youthand for the grandest, greatest prize--Excellence-- vict'ry too with knotted thew tonightcreated whirlwinds on the ice,and snowflake black

Mechen 2, Sajbell 0: Mechen, perhaps energized by their tying rally against Matexipar, came out strong early and scored a pair of goals in the first period. Menesanne 1, Lojren 1: Again, Menesanne found itself in a position to win, but couldn't convert on that chance. I am referring to the 1:36 of five-on-three action in which Menesanne had the five men. In a rare occurrence, two penalties were called on Lojren in the span of twenty-four seconds. Even with the two-man advantage, Menesanne couldn't penetrate Werner Blauvelt's staunch defense.

Brandy and Pucks, the Third

Brandy and Pucks: Matexipar, Exelsior, for the moment

By Kadmus Greningen

Atop the table in the young season, Matexipar, unbeaten and untied, now

that our City Boys have absorbed their first tie of the season.

That's four victories for the Iron Sticks, having scored 11 goals and
given up 3, and vanquished an early difficult foe in Onatten.

Matex is on the upswing, as their motto Exelsior suggests ("higher and
higher"). Heiko Moordfors may be the best goaltender in the league: 144

shots, 141 saves. This is godlike territory.

But as we know, there are no gods on earth. If Sherman Reinhardt gave
us pause to wonder during his first two games, the second two have
found him more human than divine, though still extraordinary. Holtzlund

apparently thought him worthy of 21 full-grown men, if rumors are to be

believed.

No, my point is that Moordfors is all too human, and the number of
shots that the Matexipar defense is letting through has to be somewhat
alarming to a thoughtful person.

To a fan, all that is seen is pucks swallowed up into the Moordforsian
maw.

But if the trend continues, this average of over 35 shots per game, it
will come to a point where Moordfors will tire of being peppered like a

Christmas goose. And the second line goaltender for Matexipar, Klaus
Hoppinsche, is not the most apt of minders.

When Te Staff first meets Matexipar in the ninth game of the season,
Moordfors may still be at his best. But when we meet again towards the
end, and it will be interesting to see.

I favor the balanced goaltending of first teamer Norbert Grimm and
Gimrothian Cashoth Pernoth. In the end, two may take their team
"higher" than one.

The Table

Team W L T GF GA P
Matexipar 4 0 0 11 3 8
Te Staff 3 0 1 16 4 7
