Season Preview, Contd.

This is a continuation of the season preview from the last post. In this portion, we will predict the teams finishes and tell you why. Note: There is no such thing as a playoff in Borschland. The regular season is everything

  1. Te Staff: Te Staff is always the favorite, and this year is no exception. Led by NHL lockout refugee Sherm Reinhardt, Te Staff gathered nearly 85% of the votes for league winner this year. It looks like they will steamroll their way to their thirtieth championship.

  2. Matexipar: The Iron Sticks are perennial top five finishers, and led by their outstanding goalie Heiko Moordfors, who last year posted a 1.56 goals-against average, they look to be Te Staff's primary adversary this year. Keep an eye out for their two games against Te Staff on March 8 in Staff Borsch and March 27 in Matexipar.

  3. Bjaward: With the third most championships in the league, Bjaward is always a strong contender. The Sudmass brothers, Jelle and Joris, are the two starting wings for Bjaward and are two of the best skaters in the league.

  4. Mechen: This university city recieved a single vote in the preseason poll, and some consider them a dark horse to win the championship. It will have to be the young center who just graduated from the university, Wiebe Kappe, because the rest of Mechen is experienced, but aging.

  5. Onatten: They finished a disappointing eighth last year, but a trade of cash and three players to cash-starved Holtzlund brought them a two-way defenseman that some consider one of the top three players in the league, Tjaard Meern. The organization hopes that he can give them another championship or at least a top three finish.

  6. Bevinlunz: This team was looking for an identity last year. They hope they have found it in aging superstar Sikke Pfelward, one of the best to play the game.

  7. Rijward: They are looking to goalie Rokus Osthav'n, who posted the best save percentage last year, to carry the team. Goal-scoring is a problem that will doom them to too many wasted performances by Osthav'n.

  8. Gottwrischer: The youngest teams in the league, with an average age of 23, they'll lose a lot of games due to inexperience, but they have promising talent. 20 year old center Sjoerd Bommelansch will be the focal point of their offense.

  9. Atterische: A team full of middling talent, Atterische typically is conservative during the offseason. They made few big moves, but they will get team captain Dieuwe Lugbach back from an MCL tear that kept him out for the last three weeks of the season last year, plummeting them to a thirteenth place finish.

  10. Domatische: The word is that coach Eilert Onderkammer will lose his job if the team doesn't finish in the top five. They made a few gambles, including adding high-salary player Lourens Nordhall to make an attempt to be competitive.

  11. Tarlunz: The team lost a couple of players due to free agency, another retired, and yet another was lost in preseason practice and could be out for the year. It's up to goalie Lubbert Veststaff to keep the team together. They'll win games, but they won't compete.

  12. Lojren: Te Lughaus figures to have another disappointing year. Klaes Diefenhoven is one of the best defenseman in the league, but he can't carry the team.

  13. Sajbell: Their attendance has dropped off, and they don't generate enough revenue to stay competitive. Japik Weidheim is the lone bright spot on this team, with 30 goals last year.

  14. Wrischer: Their success from last year won't carry over, as they couldn't convince some of their players to sign with them. The supporting pieces are still there, but 21 year old left wing Kai Ganesmund will have to fill the void, and he just isn't up to it.

  15. Holtzlund: Having traded away Tjaard Meern, Holtzlund will look to use the extra cash to rebuild this year. Siet Yagerhorn, the best palyer recieved in the trade, was fifth in the league last year in assists.

  16. Menesannë: They won't win a championship this year, but young goalie Wob Ramsbeck has potential and should keep them in a few games.

  17. Sichebache: Another last place finish seems imminent, but they should have more wins than last year's three. Siemen Metterherst was fourth in the league in shots attempted last year, but twenty-third in goals scored.

Season Preview

Welcome to the Season Preview of the Borschland Hockey League. We'll give a short profile of each team and predict how they will finish. Note: Borschland Hockey isn't played the way the rest of the world plays it, with outdoor arenas, less penalties, a focus on technique along with premium skating, and traditional whale-bone and wool padding.

Te Staff: (Tuh Shtahff)- Located in Staff Borsch, the capital of Borschland, this team is a real juggernaut. These fans expect championships every year, and so far, Te Staff has won the most championships of all the teams, 29.

Tarlunz: (Tahr-luhnss)- The land of many lakes and home of the Lakers, hockey is played almost nonstop in this city, with many youth leagues as well as pickup games. They can't compete with their neighbors, Te Staff, though, only winning three championships in their history.

Mechen: (Me-khehn)- Located on the Upper Borschland River, this city has an excellent university squad which serves as almost a minor-league affiliate for the pro team. They have 8 championships and are always in the hunt.

Menesannë (Meh-neh-SAH-nuh): Also located on the Upper Borschland River, this city is known more for its seminary and stunning views of the Southern Mountains than its hockey. They are one of two teams with no championships to date.

Onatten (Oh-not-en): A port vital to the economy of Borschland, they process and export mainly wood pulp. A blue-collar city, they love hockey and their team, and the stands are always packed.

Bevinlunz (BEFF-in-luhnss): A port city that serves to export goods sent by rail from the Staff Borsch area, they are owned by Arjan Ackervoort, proprietor of the railroad. His pockets are deep, and so the team is stacked with talent and always contends, despite only having three championships.

Lojren (LOHY-ren): This city is a regional port for the Northern Borschic Peninsula, and calls their their team Te Lughaus, or "the lighthouse". They have one championship.

Sajbell (SAHY-bell): This is a summer beach resort, but gets strong Nor'westers in the winter, after which their team is named. They have just one championship.

Matexipar (Mah-TEG-sih-pahr): A working-class city with the largest population in Borschland. Their major industry is steel, but their team is ironically named the "Iron Sticks". Always a contender, they have eleven championships.

Wrischer (VRIH-shur): A small city made even smaller by its realtive proximity to Matexipar, it has a university and won its first championship the previous year.

Gottwrischer (GAHT-vrih-shur): Close to Wrischer, it has a seminary, like Menesannë, but unlike them, they have two championships.

Bjaward (Bee-YA-vahrt): Located on the southern plateau of Borschland, this is a major cattle and grain center. They have the best university team in the country and the pro team has ten championships.

Rijward (REEY-vahrt): Rivals of Bjaward, they are blue-collar people through and through. They have the largest stockyards in Borschland and also have three championships.

Atterische (Ah-TARE-ih-shuh): Important agricultural and peat-cutting center. Their biggest rival is Domatische, and they have two championships.

Domatische (Doh-MAH-tih-shuh): Located near the lower Borschland River, this city is a peat center. They have two championships and a chief rival in Atterische.

Sichebach (SIH-kheh-bahkh): Located on the Borschland River between Staff Borsch and Mechen, it is an important textile mill city. They are in constant competition with Menesannë, attempting to be the first to win a championship. It's anyone's guess as to who will win it first. It may never happen.

Holtzlund (“Timberland”): This city is located in the southwest of Borschland, in the heart of the logging industry area. They have only one championship, and rarely make any difference in the league, but their fans are nevertheless perhaps the most loyal fans in all of Borschland.

That's all for now. Stay tuned for predictions, and as always, do comment.
